About This Paper

The paper is a collaborative work co-authored by Dorit Ozchakir, a dedicated professional focused on improving employee well-being through evidence-based workplace strategies, and Dr Elizabeth Kirk, an expert in self-care competencies for modern computer-based workplaces.

As the technology-driven work environment continues to expand across various sectors, including Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), contact centres, and office workplaces (i.e., all knowledge workers), employees are spending longer periods in front of computer screens. Although many organisations have implemented ergonomics training and wellness programs, data indicates a persistent rise in significant health risks, such as Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSDs), Digital Eye Strain (DES), and psychological strain. These issues are interconnected, and current health strategies often fail to address them in a comprehensive manner.

What if we could change that narrative?

This paper advocates for a holistic and proactive approach to workplace health that transcends the necessary compliance and targets the underlying causes of these challenges. A cultural shift is necessary to promote collaboration among organisations, employees, and regulatory bodies, thereby fostering the development of healthier and more sustainable screen work environments.
